Statistics on customer loyalty programs

I came across a couple of statistic charts from last year I found interesting.

Canada loves it's Customer Loyalty Programs

According to Colloquy the loyalty marketing industry Canada is one of the top ranking countries that inspire the loyalty programs. Canada has consumers registered by almost 20% more than the US.

Air Miles racks up the members!

From the looks of it members of Air Miles put more usage on their card than the Optimum and Costco loyalty cards during the month of August of last year.

Loyalty and Entertainment

Cineplex Scene card has advanced in members by almost a million joining their loyalty program each year.  They are the first and only entertainment loyalty program and continue to satisfy their consumers with valued rewards.

Easy Access

Convenience is the what most consumers look for in today's society. With mobile access loyalty members like to be able to view their information about points and reward offers.

What do you do with your rewards?

Reaping the benefits is what consumers look for in loyalty cards.  Earning those points and getting the gift card shows in 2011 Canadians would rather that then to save for bigger things like going on vacation.  To me I would rather the vacation but using Air Miles you would have to spend more to accumulate a lot of miles in order to gain the travel rewards.

  1. Hi Tara,
Thanks for the statistics! I noticed that Air Miles customers' used their cards more often than their competitors but that more Canadians are looking for financial benefits than using the points for mini-vacations or big purchase items.

I have been saving up my Air Miles points for over 10 years now, hoping to use it for a trip or a big purchase...but it hasn't happened YET!! I always forget that the points are there, until after the fact.

From your research, would you suggest a customer like myself convert the points to Air Miles Cash? I'm hesitant to do so...

    1. Thanks Saudia for coming by my blog!

Well I think for the bigger reward like going on a trip would be worth saving your miles for instead of cash rewards. It also depends on how much you use your air miles card too. If you don't use it much often with your purchases then I would switch to Air Miles Cash because that way you will receive rewards soon rather than later. If your not putting much points on the card only on here and there transactions then it wouldn't be worth sticking to the air miles dream program. That service I would recommend for more of the constant consumers that use their air miles card for most purchases.

I hope that gave you some idea of what plan seems better for you?

  2. Hi Tara,

I would love to have access to more of my loyalty cards on my phone! Based on the statistics above a lot of other Canadians like this idea also.

I find that I do not have room for more loyalty cards in my wallet, as a result, I don't carry all of them with me. That means I miss out on rewards/points when I forget to bring my card. I've even stopped signing up for new rewards because I don't have room to keep the cards.

I wonder if we really benefit from having all these reward cards, or are things just a little more expensive to cover the cost of these programs? Although I suppose the amount of money businesses make due to the information they collect on our spending habits likely covers that cost and then some!

    Thanks for the information.

    1. Jessica I couldn't agree with you more. I am part of so many rewards programs that I sometimes don't bring them all with me and I do end up missing out on gaining points when I make purchases at certain places. There are benefits though with some loyalty programs where if you bring your receipt back to the company they will put the points that you could of gained that day right back on your card. For example Shoppers Drug Mart. Countless times I just go in with some cash and forget my optimum card. All I do is save the receipt for the next time I go there and transfer the points onto the card. Only thing is you have to remember.

As for if we really benefit from having all these reward cards I would say eliminate the ones you don't use as much and continue to use the ones that you use for most transactions. The best program would be something you can gain points on everything you buy. I like the idea of using credit on any purchase and building the points on that. If you are worried about accumulating on your credit card just pay it off quickly as soon as you purchase. That way you still get the points and owe nothing. Win/Win situation I would think? I must admit I do it all the time.

Thanks for coming by and reading my blog Jessica.
